The Harry Chapin Self-Reliance Awards program distributes cash ($5,000 maximum) to outstanding grassroots organizations in the U.S. that have moved beyond charity to creating change in their communities. Applicants will be judged on their innovative approaches to fighting domestic hunger and poverty by empowering people and building self-reliance. The Harry Chapin Foundation and the U.S. World Hunger Year (WHY) administer the program together. Both are 501(c)(3) organizations. While at the site, read about the connection between WHY (founded by singer Harry Chapin in 1975) and the "Love All, Serve All" slogan found on the walls of every Hard Rock Café in the world. You may also want to order a Signature Series T-Shirt XXI designed by Bruce Springsteen. A portion of the proceeds benefit WHY. Applications must be postmarked no later than June 15, 2007.
The Motorola Foundation will provide $3.5 million in Innovation Generation grants to U.S. initiatives that inspire young people, particularly minorities, to embrace science, technology, engineering and math. Funding will focus on initiatives that creatively generate a love of science early in life and show the new generation of inventors that careers in science are important, challenging and possible. Motorola believes that "making science real makes it fun" through hands-on activities in schools, summer camps, science clubs and after school programs. Grant requests may range between $5,000 and $250,000. Priority will be given to communities where Motorola employees are located (particularly in AZ, CA, FL, IL MA, NY, PA, TX) and to programs that can incorporate Motorola employees as volunteers. Submit all proposals online from the Web site. The application deadline is June 15, 2007. Grant recipients will be announced September 1. http://www.motorola.com/content.jsp?globalObjectId=8153
The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) partners with other organizations and with the corporate world in sponsoring several dozen grant programs. We featured one of the programs in the recent past, but there are so many, it's worth another reminder to browse all the initiatives, scholarships and grant programs. These are described under the headings of Keystone Initiative Grants and Special Grant Programs. One of the latest additions is the $100,000 Budweiser Renewable Energy and Wildlife Conservation Research Prize for developing or evaluating new cost-effective renewable energy technologies or practices for industrial applications. The deadline for full proposals for this program is June 29, 2007. Some programs require pre-proposals. For these, due-dates for the next cycle are September 1 for pre-proposals, with full proposals due November 1. The current round's pre-proposals were due April 1, with full proposals due June 1. Proposals received after a deadline may be held over to another funding cycle at the Foundation's discretion. The package must be received in Louisville, KY, by 5:00 p.m. (Eastern Time), May 9, 2007 (address on the Web site below). Faxed or electronic copies will not be accepted.
