MARY KAY ASH CHARITABLE FOUNDATION: DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

Mary Kay Ash believed that motivation, recognition and unlimited opportunities transform women, empowering them to achieve better lives for themselves and their families. To that end, the Mary Kay Ash Charitable Foundation (MKACF) has distributed millions of dollars to women’s shelters since 2000. Grants of $20,000 have been awarded annually to over 150 shelters in all 50 states. Funds may be used for operating costs.

The MKACF has also underwritten two documentaries to bring national attention to the problem of domestic violence. Videos can be ordered from the Web site. A national hotline is available for those needing immediate help: 800-799-SAFE (7233).

Deadline: June 30, 2008

SHARE OUR STRENGTH: THE GREAT AMERICAN BAKE SALE

The Great American Bake Sale grants program supports efforts to increase the participation of low-income children in summer and afterschool meal programs -- to ensure that children receive nutritious food during the times they are out of school and particularly vulnerable to hunger.

Two types of grants are offered, with amounts ranging from $1,000 to $10,000:

  • Grants for Program Sponsors
  • Grants for Advocacy

Grants will be provided only to nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations, schools with a valid NCES code or local government entities that work to ensure children have access to summer and after school meal programs.

Deadline: May 30, 2008

A ROOM OF HER OWN: GIFT OF FREEDOM AWARD

A Room of Her Own is a foundation for women writers and artists and is named for Virginia Woolf’s essay “A Room of One’s Own,” published in 1929. The foundation is currently accepting applications for its 2009 Gift of Freedom Award: $50,000 to help women artists achieve the privacy and financial support necessary to pursue their art -- poetry, playwriting, creative nonfiction or fiction.

The foundation is looking for women who have solid creative goals and a specific project to accomplish during the two-year term of the grant. Applicants must be U.S. citizens who will be living in the U.S. during the grant period. There is an application fee.

Deadline: Applications postmarked on or before October 31, 2008

OPEN SOCIETY: DOCUMENTARY PHOTOGRAPHY DISTRIBUTION

This grant opportunity is for documentary photographers who have already completed a significant body of work on issues of social justice. The photographer would use the funding to collaborate with a partner organization to find new ways of using photography as a tool for positive social change. The partner might be a nonprofit, non-governmental organization (NGO) or community-based organization working with the photographer to design an innovative distribution strategy that targets specific communities and advocates for social change.

The partner organization must engage with the photographer to accomplish these goals while providing administrative, programmatic and financial or in-kind support. Grants of $5,000 to $30,000 will be awarded.

Deadline: June 20, 2008
