CORPORATIONS/FOUNDATIONS

We're taking a look this month at some companies and industries you've probably never heard of. However, what they lack in name recognition and glamour, they make up in huge sales figures. Even though revenues may be up, many face challenges from both suppliers and customers, so margins may be slim for some of these companies. You'll need to do your homework. This month's theme is mainly a reminder to look at the many companies quietly providing basic goods and services. They may be operating behind the scenes in your own community.

PURCHASING.COM -- TOP 100 CHEMICAL DISTRIBUTORS

This is an international list of the top distributors of products unfamiliar to most of us: surfactants, amines, esters, aldehydes, ketones, poyglycols and many more. We may not want to think about it, but these products end up in things we all use: paints, cosmetics, detergents, adhesives, tires, textiles, paper and even food. This list is a little dated, but watch for a new one in May.

AFTERMARKET BUSINESS – 2006 TOP 100

The Top 100 names in the automotive aftermarket are actually in two lists: the Top 50 Auto Chains and the Top 50 Service Dealers. So many prominent distributors were acquired by the largest auto chains in the past year, it was difficult to find 50 distributors with retail stores to include in this report. However, you’ll probably have no trouble finding some of these chain stores and service dealers in your neighborhood. They are ranked on the number of company-owned stores, rather than by sales.

INDUSTRIAL DISTRIBUTION – THE BIG 50

Many industrial distributors have been challenged with surging steel prices and shortages, as well as the loss of a strong manufacturing base in the U.S. Even so, these companies had to sell in the North American marketplace and make at least $50 million in annual sales to make this list. The 2006 list will be out in June.
