According to recent studies, a victim of sudden cardiac arrest is twice as likely to survive with bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), but that laypersons perform CPR in only one out of four cases. It has also been found that children aged nine and above show high quality overall performance after being trained in life support techniques. This being the case, the Medtronic Foundation has announced new grant guidelines for its Heart Rescue Program. In 2008, priority will be given to school programs that educate students about sudden cardiac arrest and prepare them to act in an emergency. Grants will go to schools, school districts, government agencies and nonprofit organizations for new initiatives that demonstrate effective training programs or emergency response planning. Grants range from $5,000 to $30,000 per year. Deadline: February 15, 2008 http://www.medtronic.com/foundation/programs_hr.html The goal of the Catalogue for Philanthropy is to raise the visibility of effective nonprofits in the Greater Washington, D.C. area, and to introduce new potential donors to new charities. You'll find help with this on the Web site. Deadline: February 22, 2008 http://www.catalogueforphilanthropy-dc.org/applynow/index.html
The mission of the Tony Hawk Foundation is to help fund and promote high quality, free public skate parks in low-income areas with high populations of "at risk" youth. Local skaters are to be involved in the design process and a strong grass-roots commitment to the park must be demonstrated. Rather than over-regulating or restricting the use of the park, skaters are encouraged to look after their own safety and the safety of others. Deadline: Midnight, March 1, 2008 http://www.tonyhawkfoundation.org/grant_application.asp
