CORPORATIONS

Our first issues had lots of instructions for gophering to sites. The term was coined by Mark McCahill of the University of Minnesota, the creator of GOPHER, a precursor to today's Web browsers. (The Golden Gopher is Minnesota's mascot.) Mark is still a Gopher -- director of Minnesota's University Technology Development Center. Our own Randy Bunney, a University of Wyoming Cowboy when all this began, is now a Gopher, too.

"Current Petroleum Prices," a title we used almost 10 years ago, could be today's headline. Seems the more things change, the more they stay the same. On the other hand, in those days, I covered both Corporations and Ethics, two words that (when used together) might be considered an oxymoron by some today. We no longer have a separate Ethics beat, but I'll mention two good ethics and corporate sites that are still going strong today.

CONTENTS:

CPSR: COMPUTER PROFESSIONALS FOR SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

CPSR pioneered the issues of responsibility and privacy in computing. The organization is now active in over 30 countries on six continents. The URL below takes you to the Privacy and Civil Liberties page. Among the useful topics there: Privacy and Your Social Security Number and Electronic Privacy Principles. Look in the left margin for links to Intellectual Property and Internet Governance issues. This site will be helpful in writing your own computing guidelines and policies.

ETHICS UPDATES

This is a site I've used from its beginning. Founded in 1994 by Lawrence M. Hinman of the University of San Diego, it provides updates on ethics-related literature. Even though it is primarily for ethics instructors and students, you'll find resources to help solve the dilemmas we face every day. There are ethics forums, case studies for discussion, a guide to writing ethics papers, computer and IT ethics, a reference room and more.

BIGBOOK

BigBook has been around for years, and over time has added some nice features: a campus directory to locate businesses near college campuses throughout the U.S., global directories, maps, driving instructions and reverse phone lookups, in addition to the Yellow Pages and People Pages. Check SuperPages On the Go for use with your cell phone. Look in the left margin and across the top for links.

Note: the Reverse Lookup link is a little tricky. If you enter a business number, it will find the business name and address for you. If you enter an individual's home number, you'll get a "No listing found" message. If that happens, look to the left of the yellow area for the link that says "Search the People Pages for . . ." (the number you just entered). This link will successfully retrieve the person's name and address.

BUSINESS JOURNALS

An old stand-by, the Business Journals site can still be accessed through its old address, Amcity.com, but its updated URL, BizJournals.com, is easier to remember. Look near the top right corner of the page for News by Markets and scroll down to find your city or region. Search by Industry, too. You'll want to take a look at Entrepreneur Profiles, the Franchise Center and Bizwomen.com.
