The Foundation Center's 9/11 Response Page chronicles philanthropy's reaction to the events of September 11, 2001. The Foundation Center "offer(s) a variety of ways for funders and relief organizations to describe their contributions to relief and recovery efforts. Our new report, Giving in the Aftermath of 9/11: Foundations and Corporations Respond, presents the first comprehensive examination of giving by institutional donors." The Philanthropy News Digest created easy-to-read tables with summaries of the 9/11 gifts by corporate grantmakers. Look in the right margin for links to the tables, which include company name, the amount given and the recipient organization. This is a must visit and a must read for all professionals involved in our industry. On August 20, 2002, Philanthrophy News Digest (PND) interviewed Dr. Jonathan F. Fanton, President of the Chicago-based John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. Fanton reflected on the MacArthur Foundation's response to the events of September 11 and the issues to which organized philanthropy should pay more attention in the wake of 9/11. The interview also gives an in-depth look into the MacArthur Foundation's conversations with other foundations seeking to respond to 9/11, which include the Century Foundation and the Markle Foundation (see Foundations). This is important reading for prospect development professionals. http://www.fdncenter.org/pnd/newsmakers/nwsmkr.jhtml;jsessionid=JODTLZEVYQYKAP5QALRSFEQ?id=4500037 Beverly Goodwin
Subtitled "Confidence in Charitable Organizations in an Age of Scrutiny," this report by the Independent Sector was released last month during the Philanthropic Leadership Forum at the National Press Club (sponsored by the Association of Professional Researchers for Advancement). Independent Sector, a nonprofit, nonpartisan coalition of more than 700 national organizations, which has been studying public attitudes toward charitable organizations since 1990, found that 64% of Americans believe charities are honest and ethical in their use of funds. Trust levels jumped considerably after the events of September 11, but have now returned to previous levels. In addition, trust in the organizations that responded to the September 11 tragedy is even higher than it is for charities in general. Trust percentages are broken down by type of charity, including such categories as private higher education, health organizations and the arts. Considering that the nonprofit sector received much scrutiny and criticism in the media in the past year, this research is reassuring. The complete report is available on the Web site as a PDF file. http://www.independentsector.org/programs/research/trust.html Pam Patton Here's a quick run-down of some large companies that have increased their giving since 9/11 -- many by a hefty percentage. http://www.crainsny.com/industry.cms?industryId=250
