This year's annual listing of the top 1000 companies (by market capitalization) reflects the recent batterings endured by technology firms. For example, Intel, formerly the world's second most valuable company, slid to thirteenth place, while Pfizer, the maker of Viagra, rose from twentieth to fourth place. General Electric is in first place again this year.
BusinessWeek's site offers the full listing, along with scoreboards, tables and related content. http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/01_28/b3740010.htm Several of us are featuring Crain's this month, so I'll just briefly mention their Company Research page. You'll find ranked lists of Chicago area companies, their top executives, revenues, profits, employees, and hot links to each company's web site. http://www.chicagobusiness.com/cgi-bin/portal.pl?id=25 or, on the home page, look mid-page-right for Company Research http://www.chicagobusiness.com/
When you reach a company's web site, find information on their corporate giving interests by looking for terms like "community," "public affairs," "grants," "news," "foundation," and "About (the company)." If it's not apparent on the front page, check the site index.
As long as we're in the neighborhood, let's visit the research department in the development office at Northwestern U. Christina Pulawski and her researchers created and maintain this page of super links for prospect researchers. Look for their favorites (with stars). http://pubweb.northwestern.edu/~fla331/
