THOMAS REGISTER

"What's the name of the company that makes Snapple?" Thomas Register can give you the name of the subsidiary and of the parent company, a brief description of its products, and the location of its headquarters. You can narrow the search by state or province, or select multiple states.

Search by:

  • Product or service
  • Company name
  • Brand name

You'll retrieve the address, phone number and, if available, a direct link to the company. This is a good resource when you want to contact similar businesses nationwide or in your local area.

BIZ BUY SELL

If you're trying to estimate what a business is worth in a particular area of the country, you might try this site. States are grouped by region, so scroll down the "Location" list until you find the area or state you need.

You'll retrieve a list with links leading to descriptions of the businesses for sale in that region. When you bring up each description, read to the bottom, and you may find a link directly to the company itself! You'll know exactly what's being sold, making it easier to estimate its value.

ON PHILANTHROPY

If you want to keep up with trends, practices and commentary in the world of philanthropy, you'll find some good reading here. A new issue appears every month, but articles from earlier issues are available, too.

To access archived articles, I find it's easiest to look under Articles by Topic in the left margin (in the tiny orange print). You can search by author or article type, but it's more interesting just to scroll through the topics such as Fundraising, Corporate Giving and Foundations. Under each topic articles are arranged by date with the most recent first.

Recent articles (May 2003) include:

  • What Are We Hiding? by David Zucker
  • What to Look for When Seeking a List Broker by Linda Dolan

Older articles (early 2003) on classic development topics:

  • Why Bill Gates is Not a Prospect for Your Campaign
  • Making the Most of Naming Opportunities, both by Robert Hoak

If you insist on being efficient rather than serendipitous, you might want to use the Search box in the upper right corner.
