Since we'll be in the hometown of Mickey Mouse this summer for the annual APRA conference, it might be a good time to consider theme parks as prospects. Let's look at amusement parks world-wide, and then focus on the giving programs of a few of the largest companies. About.com includes almost everything anyone would want to know about theme parks. Under Essentials, (middle of page) see USA Attractions, sortable by state, and Fast Facts, for mini-profiles of 40 of the parks. The Homework Helper will save YOU a lot of homework; parks are grouped by parent company here. The News Roundup may give you some ideas for fundraising. For example, the opening of the new roller coaster at the Cedar Point park (Ohio) inspired the American Red Cross to auction off seats for the first ride. Be sure to check the links in the left margin to find even more parks in the USA, Canada, Latin America, Europe, Asia, Africa, the Middle East -- almost anywhere in the world. Use the last link in this section to find About.com. Very few of the companies say anything at all about their philanthropic activities. Here are some that do: Disneyland and Disneyworld focus on public elementary education. Disneyworld also supports a long list of established wildlife conservation organizations. http://disney.go.com/disneylearning/clc Knotts Berry Farm brings children to the park for hands-on educational adventures. Look for Adventures in Education in the left margin. http://www.knotts.com/
Yet another good service for finding a company: Dot Com Directory. Search by business name, type or location. Subsidiaries and divisions appear under the name of the ultimate parent, along with a company capsule (from Hoover's) and a direct link to the company's site.
Randy Bunney, our former compadre at the Internet Prospector, sends a tip about a site called dbusiness.com, an online service dedicated to covering city-specific, real-time business news on the Internet. They are creating a network of 50-70 full-time reporters and editors throughout the United States, specializing in reporting on emerging companies in the high tech and bio tech industries. See Pam Smith's News beat for more details on its features and instructions for getting the most out of the site.
