Guess which companies are doing very well in these uncertain economic times? For the answer, check your wallet after your next fill-up at the gas station. Let's take a look at some of those gas and oil companies and their giving programs.
Giving is concentrated where the company has facilities. Major offices are in Ohio, Kentucky (Valvoline), Georgia (APAC Highway Construction), London and the Netherlands, with locations in over 140 countries. Ashland focuses on supporting education from kindergarten through college. In choosing what to support they consider diversity, collaborative efforts, transformational thinking, continuous improvement and outcomes. http://www.ashland.com/community/index.html Chevron focuses on education, with emphasis on programs promoting excellence in math and science education, the environment and international community development. Programs are initiated by Chevron and developed through partnerships in the community. http://www.chevron.com/community/ The world's largest oil producer, Exxon has just announced record earnings, with first quarter results of $5.05 billion, up 51% over the first quarter of 2000. Corporate giving flows to eight areas: the environment; public policy/research; health; education; health, civic and community service organizations; minority and women-oriented organizations; arts, museums and historical associations; and united/federated appeals. The Exxon Mobil Education Foundation gives through seven programs that support math education; school improvement; undergraduate science, technology, engineering and math (STEM Program); organizational support; special projects; and its education matching gift program. http://www.exxonmobil.com/community/index.html The company's charitable giving is primarily in "locations of strong business interests." Major operating areas are in Alaska, Utah, Texas and Oklahoma (headquartered in Bartlesville), with global regional sites in Norway, Australia and the UK. Phillips is in the process of acquiring Tosco, making the combined company the second largest refiner and third largest marketer in the U.S. Programs target youth/education, volunteerism, the arts, the environment and sports sponsorships. http://www.phillips66.com/Community/guidelines.htm Shell is owned by the Royal Dutch/Shell Group of Companies. The Shell Foundation, established in June 2000, is a charity registered in the UK. The foundation focuses on three themes: Sustainable Energy, Sustainable Communities and Youth Enterprise. Texaco funds a number of programs in nonprofit organizations and institutions.
