    HARVARD BUSINESS REVIEW
Do you know about the huge increase in corporate patent
revenues in recent years?  Patent revenues have shot up
700% in just the last eight years.  Experts predict that
revenue could top half a trillion dollars annually by the
middle of the next decade.  IBM, for example, now makes
$1 billion annually from patent licensing royalties.

These facts were revealed by Kevin Rivette and David Kline,
authors of "Rembrandts in the Attic: Unlocking the Hidden
Value of Patents," in a December 1999 interview for the
Harvard Business Review.  Unfortunately, the interview is no
longer available free, but the book can be ordered.  Find
a review of this book and others on patents by searching on
the word, "patent*."  Try a search on "philanthropy," too.

If you're quick, you can read some excellent articles and
executive summaries from the Harvard Business Review, free
of charge, before they slip into the archives or disappear
altogether.  Several good articles appear (and disappear)
in the "Ideas at Work" section each month, including,
"Philanthropy's New Agenda: Creating Value," by
Michael E. Porter and Mark R. Kramer, in the
November/December 1999 issue. Find a summary of the article
on the authors' Center for Effective Philanthropy page:

PATENT, TRADEMARK & COPYRIGHT INFO ON THE WEB: WVU

After discovering the juicy news about patent revenues and
their potential impact on businesses (and, perhaps,
philanthropic funding), go to this page at West Virginia
University's library for some good links to patent,
trademark and copyright information.  Learn about U.S. and
foreign patents, and make use of the guides, tutorials and
    legal resources.

    DOWJONES.COM

In addition to the usual fare found on many financial sites,
I like dowjones.com's seach feature, which allows searching
on first and last names.  I turned up lots of good articles
and profiles on some of our business-executive alumni.
