ROBERT R. MCCORMICK TRIBUNE FOUNDATION
Internet Prospector, July '98
Established as a charitable trust in 1955 by Col. Robert R. McCormick,
Chicago Tribune editor/publisher, this philanthropy became a foundation
in 1989. With that transition, the foundation narrowed its
giving focus to four areas: Communities, Journalism, Education and
Citizenship.
Of particular interest is their journalism area. The program strives
to strengthen the "free press" throughout the Americas. The
four cornerstones of their philanthropic strategy include:
strengthen "far sighted" leadership in news organizations, preserve
freedom of expression, encourage diversity and cover national security
issues.

NEC FOUNDATION UPDATE
Internet Prospector, March '96
IP first reviewed the NEC corporate website in December 1994. At the
time, though, NEC's Foundation page was very much under construction. Over
a year has passed since the first visit, but the wait, my friends, has
been worthwhile. At the NEC Foundation page you will find the familiar
categories:
-
Funding Guidelines
-
Grants
-
What's New
-
Financial Statement
But here the similarity ends. Their Grants section classifies awards by
organization type, purpose of grant, and the grantee's headquarters location.
Image-mapped pie charts show NEC's giving percentages to organizations
and for specific purposes. By clicking on a particular slice of the pie,
you will jump to the particular grantee or grant category. Lastly, NEC
has provided a point-and-click USA map that shows the geographical distribution
of the organizations they support.
NEC's outstanding use of web technology and their thorough treatment
of corporate philanthropy earns them an IP Nugget Award for Excellence!

objectives, a point-person to talk to, accessibility to the charity, national
reach (if not a national presence) and a desire and commitment for true
partnership.

the company's philosophy of philanthropy:

strategies that can help solve societal ills and advance the quality of
life! We call this approach venture philanthropy. Our specific philanthropic
priorities are in the areas of science education and health care. Our commitment
to serving those in need in our communities and the world at large takes
many forms. Those forms of support come via product donations, disaster
relief, science and education programs, and assistance to nonprofit organizations

TOSHIBA AMERICA FOUNDATION
Internet Prospector, June '96
This is a first. If you find Toshiba America Foundation's community
relations page, you can get a CD. Of course, the CD's a surprise of sorts
since they don't tell you what you've won. However, apart from the gimmick,
the Toshiba America Foundation supports science, mathematics, and technology
education. Efforts in this area are for K-12, and with notable support
at the school district level.

TOYOTA USA FOUNDATION
Internet Prospector, June '99
Through "Building Bridges to Better Education,"
Toyota USA
funds innovative K-12 programs, especially
in math and
science. Grants totaling $370,000 were
announced in April.
Toyota USA supports these programs in partnership
with some
of America's leading institutions and organizations,
so K-12
schools are asked not to apply directly to
the foundation.
There are no deadlines, and the process takes
about six
months. The application form is provided
online to print
and mail in. (However, I couldn't get
any of the foundation
pages to actually print on command.)
