THE VIRGINIA 100

2005 was good to the state of Virginia. Virginia Business Magazine recently published its 16th annual list of the state's wealthiest people, and this year they found 11 more entries and upped their threshold to $40 million -- $5 million more than last year. The two new billionaires are female. Some of the more well-known names include Jimmy Dean, the Mars family and Governor Mark Warner. This year's listing includes more details on methodology, for those interested in the nuts and bolts.

THE 400 RICHEST AMERICANS

Some of us may take the Forbes lists for granted -- but isn't it fun when a new one comes out? Forbes recently released its listing of the 400 Richest Americans and the Web site is a virtual carnival of wealth.

In this 24th annual listing, the rich have gotten notably richer, as their combined net worth rose $125 billion to $1.13 trillion. That's trillion, folks. Thank rising real estate and oil prices, if you must.

The Web site features slide shows of the honorees by categories including Working Girls, Jocks, Digirati, Booze Hounds, Fashionistas, Gourmands and plain old Investors.

View their hometowns on a map or sort the list by rank, name, net worth, age or residence.

Read lifestyle pieces including Homes of the Billionaires or read Deceased and Dropped, about the 42 previous listees who have left the prestigious ranking. Let's hope none of those "unfortunates" are on your prospect lists!

Oh, here's the top ten list (drum roll please):

  • Bill Gates
  • Warren Buffett
  • Paul Allen
  • Michael Dell
  • Lawrence Ellison
  • And five Waltons
