CONTENTS: The next time you pay your cable bill, think of all the fortunes that cable industry leaders have made. The site is a well organized, nicely designed treasure trove of information that may help you better appreciate your next cable bill. The Cable Center , whose mission is to bring information to the public and celebrate cable's contributions to society, has a Web site that features biographies of the people behind those fortunes. In 1985, Pennsylvania State University launched the Oral History project, which continues today at the Cable Center 's Denver headquarters. More than 200 interviews are available, with many of them online. For an archive of interviews of cable leaders, go to: http://www.cablecenter.org/education/library/oralHistories.cfm Scroll down through the names and click to open the interviews. Full transcripts are usually available and some pages feature video (as befitting the industry). The Cable Center 's Barco Library, which bills itself as the primary resource for information on the cable industry, also collects historical papers. Information about the innovators behind those collections is available at: http://www.cablecenter.org/education/library/manuscripts.cfm The Cable Center also features an annual Hall of Fame. The 2006 page is still under construction, but you can scroll through the 2004 and 2005 honorees. Click on a name and you will see a brief biography and links to a Video Tribute, Photo Slide Show and Honoree Quote, as well as a link to the person's Oral History page. http://www.cablecenter.org/education/exhibits/hallOfFame.cfm?bhcp=1
Sports Illustrated (SI) and SI.com ask the unthinkable. Are America 's richest athletes growing poorer? They've been studying the compensation of top athletes for three years and have found that the average wealth of the top 50 actually fell by $500,000 when compared to last year's list. Included in the compensation figures are salary, bonuses, winnings and endorsement money. The 2004 list can be found at: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2004/writers/pete_mcentegart/05/14/money.list/index.html The 2005 list is available at: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2005/writers/jonah_freedman/06/23/fortunate.50/index.html You can also find a list of the top 20 foreign athletes at: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/more/specials/fortunate50/index.20.html and a slide show of SI's Future Fortunates -- those athletes who might show up on next year's listing at: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/multimedia/photo_gallery/0607/gallery.10fortunate/content.1.html For the main page, go to: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/more/specials/fortunate50/
