LIBRARY AND ARCHIVES CANADA

An "innovative knowledge institution that combines the collections, services and staff expertise of the former National Library of Canada and National Archives of Canada," Library and Archives Canada seeks to preserve Canada's heritage and make it accessible. Certainly, there is much to explore at this site.

On the left side of the page, click on Browse Selected Topics for a drop-down menu. Topics include Genealogy and Family History and, under More Topics, Biography/People.

If you're researching current and historical Canadian women, Library and Archives Canada has set up a site featuring bios and references for additional readings about women who have made contributions in areas including Theater and Dance, Art, Sport, Politics and Science.

DICTIONARY OF CANADIAN BIOGRAPHY ONLINE

The Library and Archives Canada home page links to the Dictionary of Canadian Biography Online, which provides biographies of people who died between 1000 and 1920. The site will be expanded and enhanced.

Use the Search feature to look up a name, or browse by first letter of last name. Click on the excellent Advanced Search (choose Flash or HTML versions) to narrow your search by Volume (there are 14 volumes that cover the years 1000-1920), Geography, Gender or Identification, which includes ethnicities and professions. You can view all biographies that match your criteria, or search for a specific term within your set.

TORONTO DEMOGRAPHICS

The official Web site of the City of Toronto features everything any visitor would need to know about the city. If you want to learn about Torontons (Torontoans? Torontoites?), go to the Demographics page. Here you will find neighbourhood profiles based on the 2001 Census. Click on the map and you will be given the choice to open a PDF file covering Age and Gender or another covering Immigration, Ethnicity and Language. You can also access a profile of the entire city.

Ward profiles, also based on the 2001 Census, are available. Data in these profiles include Population, Ethnocultural, Families, Education, Labour Force, Income and Travel Characteristics.

The City's 2003 Employment Survey is available on the site, as are reports on Housing, Children, Ethno-Racial Inequality and Population and Aging.

ATLANTIC CANADA'S TOP 50 CEOS FOR 2004

Each year, Atlantic Business Magazine publishes a list of Top 50 CEOs in Canada's Eastern provinces. The 2001 list was reviewed by Internet Prospector, but it's worth another look. The site provides photos, quotes and profiles but, unfortunately, is a long page to scroll through.

On the left side of the page, click on Stats 2004 for info on company revenues, breakdowns by business sectors, age, gender and education, what cars the CEOs drive, what electronic device they'd most hate to lose and other tidbits. Also click on the archived listings to see CEO lists back to 2000.
