There’s something about the “40 under 40” designation. These are lists of young men and women who are usually overlooked in the big lists. They are people with a lot of potential and just aching to be recognized. The Greater Syracuse Chamber of Commerce, Leadership Greater Syracuse and The Business Journal have joined together to sponsor a recognition program that honors 40 business leaders under the age of 40. Read short profiles of the 1999 winners, with educational and career history, board memberships and philanthropic interests. There's plenty of info for the discerning researcher.
The names are familiar: Dell, Bezos, Omidyar, Filo and Yang. The biographical information provided is scant, and glib (Bezos carries a Swiss Army knife; Dell likes the Doors and the Stones) but the wealth estimates are always intriguing. Also, see more in-depth interviews with some of the less- rich, like Henry Nicholas III of Broadcom, Eric Brewer and Paul Gauthier of Inktomi and Jeffrey Arnold of WebMD. But, hey, they'll do.
The recent market downturn hasn’t affected giving, at least not for community foundations in the Silicon Valley, reports the San Jose Mercury News. Reasons for the area’s generosity include “a powerful economy; the trillion-dollar generational transfer of wealth to baby boomers; and a new generation of givers who are discovering philanthropy's emotional and spiritual rewards, as well as its tax benefits,” the newspaper reports. Infoseek founder Steve Kirsch, who made a $1 million donation to the local United Way, however, feels that the area’s philanthropy isn’t matching its potential. “‘I think it's just a drop in the bucket,’ he says. Kirsch, who places his personal assets at about $150 million, has the largest fund at Community Foundation Silicon Valley, valued at roughly $75 million. ‘There are a lot of people far, far richer than I am. How is it I have the largest fund there?’”
