WASHINGTON, D.C. MANSIONS

The Washington, D.C. area has more than its share of mega-mansions. The article, "Big, Big House," published May 17, states that, according to the 2000 census, four out of the top five big-house communities in the country are in the Washington suburbs.

One of the biggest homes is a proposed 103,667-square-footer to be built by Lebanese billionaire, Rafik Hariri. Other top privately-owned homes are featured, including tech tycoon Jim Kimsey's place overlooking the Potomac.

So what do people put into these monster homes? The article cites swimming pools and cabanas, gyms, tennis complexes, basketball courts, movie rooms, safe rooms, beer halls and village scenes complete with cobblestone streets.

The Washington Post makes articles available for 14 days. If this article has been archived, it may be retrieved using the site's archive search at

iHAMPTONS

For the dish on the comings and goings of the rich and famous (Billy Joel, Alec Baldwin, Jerry Seinfeld), who live in one of the swankiest areas the U.S., on Long Island, New York, visit iHamptons.com. The tabs at the top of the page help with navigation, but, sadly, the site offers no search function.

The site's iJournal reads like a gossip column, which I suppose it is. iPeople is disappointing. It features an advice column and a community message board. Throughout the site, a tidbit called Factorium gives you one factoid with every click. For example, Woody Allen sold his Southampton house on Meadow Lane because the dunes blocked his view of the ocean and the town wouldn't let him move the dunes.

Most disappointing is iProperties, which is "under development."

HAMPTON COTTAGES AND GARDENS

Another useful site if you're researching The Hamptons is Hampton Cottages and Gardens. Click on Deeds and Donts for the inside stories behind the big real estate deals.

The “select” articles on the Web site offer just a taste of the scoop on the economies of the $25 million and up market, the architects, who lives next to whom and the local soirées.
