THE HISTORYMAKERS

The HistoryMakers is a nonprofit organization dedicated to African American history. It serves as an archive, library, museum, educator and programmer. One of its projects is the collection of interviews of 5,000 known and unknown history makers. The Web site features profiles of prominent African Americans, categorized in sections including Art, Civic, Business, Entertainment, Law, Media, Medical, Military, Music, Political, Religion, Science and Sports. Click on a category to view one featured biography, plus a list of links to other bios on the right side of the page. Flip from one category to another easily by using the Select a Category drop-down box at the top of the page.

Bios may feature extras such as a list of the interviewee's likes and dislikes (color, food, time of year), photos and video clips.

There is a search function, but not on the home page. Once you're on a category page, enter your search term in the box at the top of the page.

WASHINGTON BUSINESS JOURNAL PEOPLE IN THE NEWS

The Washington Business Journal keeps an index of people mentioned in its news pages. Browse by week and select either the online or print edition listings. Be careful with the print editions -- the links I tested didn't necessarily contain the name I was looking for. The online links, however, did deliver for the most part. Just be aware that not all names referenced in the articles are indexed.

It's a "hit or miss" site, but if you're browsing for prominent folks in the Washington, DC, area, this might be a good place to start looking.
