SPORTS ILLUSTRATED THEN AND NOW

Sports figures can come and go at an alarming rate. The names that circulate around the water cooler one month are the source of "whatever happened to . . ." wonderings the next.

Sports Illustrated has put together a Web site that will help us answer those "whatever happened to . . ." queries. Their "Then and Now" gallery profiles such athletes as Zola Budd, the barefoot Olympian, and Hershel Walker, the former pro football star.

The "Then and Now" lists from 2000 and 2001 are also available at the site so you can check up on old favorites such as Debi Thomas, Olga Korbut (pre-celebrity boxing and shoplifting) and the sadly deceased Seattle Slew.

INTERNET BROADWAY DATABASE (IBDB)

Give my regards to Dorry Kelley of Syracuse University for this find: the Internet Broadway Database (IBDB). Those of you who are familiar with the Internet Movie Database will feel quite comfortable at this site.

The IBDB claims to hold records from the beginnings of New York theater to the present, from Aristotle to Ziegfeld, so if you're searching for someone who has performed on Broadway, and you can't make it to Times Square, this would be the next best place to go.

I did a quick test and found Alfred Lunt listed in a 1903 play. Very nice.

The site lists the person's function (performer, writer, director) and the dates of the production. Very early runs may have incomplete dates. It also gives brief biographical information, such as spouse name and the dates of birth and death.

You can search generally or narrow your search using the following categories: Show, People, Theater or Organization.

IBDB was created by the Research Department of the League of American Theatres and Producers, the national trade association for Broadway.

ABOUT FAMOUS PEOPLE

Compiled by author and historian John T. Marck, this site concentrates on historical figures, such as Famous and Fascinating Women in History, Great Authors of the World (though the only ones listed are from the U.S.) and Famous Figures in Black History.

The author's personal interests are revealed in a page on the history of Maryland's Calvert family and another on the Beatles. And there is a very useful collection of historical events by date.

The site promises more famous people to be added later.
