AFRICANA.COM

This site describes itself as a "lagniappe," which some of you, particularly Louisianans, know means "a little something extra."  That's perhaps a bit modest. The site, newly acquired by Time Warner, links teachers and students with lesson plans that support the teaching of black culture and history. It connects black churches with their congregations, reviews books, music and movies that will enrich readers' lives, and provides features on fields ranging from cooking and gardening, to health and parenting.

Also, of most interest to us, the site profiles black leaders. Click on People of the Century (look along the left-hand side of the page) for a look at bios of the Man, Woman, Artist, Athlete, Thinker or Leader of the Century -- and profiles of many of the runners-up. And as if that weren't enough, go to http://www.africana.com/tt_subject.htm for links to articles about people from Mumia Abu-Jamal to Meles Zenawi.

DISTINGUISHED WOMEN

This site's creator, Danuta Bois, says she developed the site to give women their due. She says, "We need to know what they did and how they did it so that we may learn from them and be inspired by them. We need this to be common knowledge."

This site has no bios of its own, but does offer hundreds of links to other Web sites' bios of female writers, educators, scientists, heads of state, politicians, civil rights crusaders, artists, entertainers and others, past and present.

You can search by name or by subject, including anthropology, archeology, art, beauty and fashion, engineering, journalism, mathematics, medicine and health, screen and stage, and veterinary medicine.

Be sure to check out the page on Black History Month for links to prominent African-Americans, as well as four pages of links to biographies of prominent African-American women, by subject.

NATELi

The Network for African-American Technology Entrepreneur's List was set up to serve and support African-American high-tech investors and entrepreneurs. If your prospect fits this description, take a look at this site. You can find profiles of the board of directors (scroll to the bottom of the page and click on About NATELi), or you may want to click on a new bi-quarterly feature: the Entrepreneurs Spotlight. The inaugural column features John Templeton, an Oakland, California-based publisher. The page features his resume and an interview. It's a good start to what may become an important site to keep your eye on.
