    PROTEUS YELLOW AND WHITE PAGES

“Type Once, Search Everywhere” is the motto of Proteus.
Named after a mythical shapeshifter, this site offers a
    series of all-in-one search interfaces.

To use the Proteus Yellow and White pages, enter your
criteria, choose your type of search (name, reverse phone,
address or reverse e-mail for either a person or a
business), the search engine you want to use (Anywho,
555-1212, Infospace, Switchboard, WhoWhere) and your
search will be sent, performed and delivered.

If you are requesting a feature that the search engine
does not support -- for example, trying to do a reverse
phone number search in WhoWhere -- you will be given a
    gentle notification.

Links on the page can take you directly to those search
engines’ home pages and help pages. Other links will take
you directly to many other search engines, including
Bigfoot, Excite and Yahoo People Search.

Other Proteus pages can help you with encyclopedic
research, images and clip art, words and phrases, health
information, business and financial information, children's
sites, online discussion groups and informacion en espanol.

    BRITANNICA

After Encyclopedia Britannica announced that it would get
out of the door-to-door sales business and put its vast
information resources on the Internet for free, its web
site became so popular it had to be shut down.

Now that the site is up and running again, you will find
that it offers the text of more than 75 magazines, a
directory of what it calls the "best sites on the Web," as
well as the "Books in Print" database.

A sample search would look like this: enter “Ted Turner”
(with the quotes) on the home page in the “find” box.  The
default searches the entire page for your exact phrase.
Click on “other options” to narrow your search to a title,
or to include all, any or none of your search terms.

The result's page displays four columns. The first column
features encyclopedia entries, such as those about Turner,
his wife Jane Fonda and his company, Cable News Network.
The second column contains "best of the web" web sites,
which include an ABC biography and a transcript from PBS.

The third column features magazine articles from such
publications as Inc., Fortune and Harper’s. The fourth
column recommends related books, which you can purchase
online from Barnes & Noble, if you're so inclined.

The results are rated with red stars, then dated and
summarized so you won’t waste your time clicking on
something you don’t want. An excellent reference resource!

And also, the site is also available under the
brittanica.com domain, which is a great help for those
of us whose spelling or keyboarding skills aren’t always
    at 100%.
