BIOGRAPHICAL SOURCES AND REFERENCE DESK
Internet Prospector, October '97
Of course, the IP People page is one of the most comprehensive sources
for biographical resources on the Web, so go there first.
http://www.internet-prospector.org/bio.html
But, if you don't see what you need there, two other sites have also
compiled links to biographical resources on the Web. From Horror
Movie Stars to U.S. Presidents, you may be able to find what you are looking
for at:

BOSTON.COM

CURRENT BIOGRAPHY EXCERPTS
Internet Prospector, March '97
The H.W. Wilson Co. is offering excerpts from the thousands of biographies
in its Current Biography library. Their stated plan is to feature a timely
theme -- for example, bios of actors around Oscar time, and prominent African-Americans
for Black History Month.
For now, to coincide with last summer's Olympics, you will be able to
find bios of athletes in sports ranging from auto racing to sled dog racing
to track and field. I guess we'll just have to keep checking back to see
if they do decide to add more timely updates.

GARAGE.COM
Internet Prospector, March '99
Take a peek at a few "Investors In Heaven." Information on
many venture capitalists isn’t always easy to find. This
is somewhat true here, too. BUT in "Heaven," you will find
lists of venture capitalists and corporate investors, along
with hot links to most entries. Each hot linked site is
loaded with partner bios! Trying to fund an entrepreneur
program? Garage.com just may be a first stop on your
prospecting list.

GOSSIP CENTRAL
Internet Prospector, December '97
Okay, so few of us may actually have a professional reason to scout
out the hottest scoop on celebs. But, for those who do, this site includes
links to such venerable sources as Rush & Malloy in The New York Daily
News, Liz Smith in The New York Post and Army Archerd from Daily Variety,
as well as People Daily, Morning Report from the Los Angeles Times, and
The Reliable Source from The Washington Post. Plus, if you link to Buzz
Online, you can "meet the L.A. Six -- the half dozen dull white guys who've
quietly accumulated more of L.A. than anyone
else in town."

THE INTERNET MOVIE DATABASE
Internet Prospector, June '95
Streisand, Speilberg, and Redford. What do they all have in common?
Private foundations. So if you're going after celebrity money then check
out the Internet Movie Database (IMD). It may save some time if agents
and publicists are slow responding to your requests for a celebrity's professional
credits. According to the IMD's FAQ:
The Internet Movie Database is an international volunteer effort
co ordinated via the USENET newsgroup rec.arts.movies.
The objective of the database is to provide useful and up to date movie
information *freely* available on-line, across as many systems as possible.
It currently covers over 41,000 movies with over 525,000 filmography entries
and is expanding continuously. http://us.imbd.com/

LIVES
Internet Prospector, June '99
Well, dang! I may as well just hang up my hat as People
Editor. Why bother scouring the web for biographical info
when Lives has done all the work for me?
Lives bills itself as the largest guide to biography sites
on the Web and, while that’s hard to prove, I haven’t yet
seen anything out there that could compete with this site.
The site features thousands of links to biographies,
autobiographies, diaries, memoirs, letters, and oral
histories about the famous and not-so-famous. But if you’re
looking for juice on today’s hottest movie stars or rock
musicians, look elsewhere--this is one site that is
serious about biography.
You can search under “Special Collections,” which includes
sections on African Americans, Women, the U.S. Civil War,
Holocaust Survivors and Rescuers, and Canadians. Or search
for Individuals, alphabetically (most of these are
historical listings).
Under Collections, then Professions, you will find a lengthy
list of links to bios of kings, popes, prime ministers and
presidents; congressmen and women; poets, writers, beatniks
and anarchists; scientists, psychologists, sociologists and
anthropologists; cartoonists and criminals; jazz musicians
and big band leaders; composers, artists, authors, and
dancers and on and on and on . . . whew!
But wait--I ran a site search for “entrepreneur” and “CEO”
and came up empty. Hmm . . . perhaps I still have a job to
do after all.
P.S.: If you’re looking for something that’s not on the
site, you can submit a help request by email--worth a try
if you get stuck!

MARQUIS WHO's WHO ("Fifty Great Americans")
Internet Prospector, July '96

Great Americans, including Ted Turner, Yo Yo Ma, Walter Annenberg, Paul
Newman and many more.

MR. SHOWBIZ
Internet Prospector, September '96
Find a "Star Bio" for that celebrity prospect at Mr.Showbiz's homepage.
Search for bios by name or by profession. Star bios will outline all the
movies, records or books produced by your celebrity. Additional features
include Hollywood news, a Reuters news link and a searchable archive.

NET MOGULS
Internet Prospector, October '97
This site is almost too much fun. The wacky folks behind Net Moguls
have assembled a listing of cyberspace's robber barons -- the men and women
who have made their fortunes in Internet technology. Included are Steve
Jobs, Jerry Yang, David Filo and, but of course, Bill Gates.
OK, but the really, really fun thing about this site is that each millionaire
is featured on a trading card -- with wonderful caricatures on the front
and "stats" -- quotes and the like -- on the back. You won't have more
fun researching rich people anywhere else on the Web.

NEW YORK STATE EDUCATION DEPARTMENT
Internet Prospector, March '97
Don't ask why the New York Education Department oversees the licensing
of physicians, chiropractors, veterinarians, pharmacists, nurses, engineers,
architects, CPA's, social workers, accupuncturists, interior designers
and masseuses, to name but a few. Just be glad they do -- because they
provide, at the Web site for the Office of the Professions, information
on the licensing of these professionals, as well as descriptions of professional
misconduct and discipline. Search by name and profession.
According to a February 2 New York Times article, by the end of this
month, the list will be expanded to cover the last three years.
Thanks to David Shanton for this site.

THE NOBEL PRIZE INTERNET ARCHIVE
Internet Prospector, February '98
Don't let this put you off -- the site opens with "Nobel News Flash
-- 1997 Nobel Prizes Announced this Week!" Well, actually not; they were
announced last October.
That aside, this site does provide accurate and up-to-date information
on Nobel Laureates from 1901 (in some categories) to the present. You can
choose from the categories of literature, physics, chemistry, peace, economics,
or physiology and medicine, or use the handy search feature to pinpoint
your prospect.
Brief biographical information -- dates of birth, education, current
affiliation -- is provided, along with links to related books from Book
Stacks, and other web sites about your laureate. You can choose to link
directly to an Alta Vista search on the person's name, or add a link to
the site yourself.
And, if you're interested in the flip side of great science, check out
the IgNobel Prizes, which honor people whose achievements "cannot or should
not be reproduced."

SAN DIEGO PHILANTHROPISTS
Internet Prospector, June '96
San Diego Magazine Online interviews and profiles those who have contributed
to the arts, medicine, and social causes in the San Diego area. The president
of the San Diego Community Foundation estimates that as much as $300 million
was raised from private donations last year.
The big givers include Joan Kroc, Audrey Geisel, Muriel Gluck, Marianne
McDonald, and athletes Tony Gwynn (with his wife, Alicia), John Carney,
Darrien Gordon, and Leslie O'Neal. An excellent article on those who give,
and what inspires them in their philanthropy.
